The Squirrel Nut Zippers at the Uptown
JaM Cellars presents the Squirrel Nut Zippers at the Uptown Theatre on March 20 at 8 p.m. The Squirrel Nut Zippers began in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990s, as an escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio. Jimbo Mathus, his wife Katherine Whalen and drummer Chris Phillips formed the band playing for friends and family. The band, which grew in size, developed a reputation for their quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music and punk rock leanings. After the band’s release Hot became a surprise commercial success, the group went on to sell more than 3 million albums. They play a hybrid stew of Southern roots music, New Orleans jazz, vaudeville and blues with a healthy touch of irreverence.
