The Beach Boys at Blue Note Summer Sessions:
The Beach Boys headline the Blue Note Summer Sessions at the Meritage Resort on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The group’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and their friend Al Jardine. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented lyrics and musical ingenuity, they are one of the most influential acts of the rock era. In 1962, they enjoyed their first national hit with “Surfin’ Safari,” beginning a string of hit singles that reflected a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars and romance, dubbed the “California sound.” They were one of the few American rock bands to sustain their commercial standing during the British Invasion. Bruce Johnston joined the band in 1965 as Brian moved away from beach-going themes for more introspective lyrics and ambitious studio productions. In 1966, the Pet Sounds album and “Good Vibrations” single raised the group’s standing as rock innovators. Dennis drowned in 1983, and Brian became estranged from the group in the 1990s. Following Carl’s death from lung cancer in 1998, Jardine left the band while Love was granted legal rights to tour under the group’s name and continues performing with Johnston. Brian died of respiratory arrest in 2025. The Beach Boys have sold more than 100 million records worldwide. Mike Love and Bruce Johnson remain in the band.
