Juneteenth Celebration with Chef Tanya Holland at CIA Copia

Juneteenth honors African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. This year, we are excited to host Chef Tanya Holland—acclaimed chef, restaurateur, and expert on soul food—for a Juneteenth celebration on Sunday, June 18 at CIA at Copia. The menu is inspired by the Texas BBQ classic, meat and three, with beer provided by East Brother Beer Company. We look forward to seeing you for an evening of food, drink, and celebration of Black culture in the Copia Gardens. We welcome you all and your families to join us!

From Chef Tanya Holland:

“It’s amazing to me that I was born almost exactly 100 years after Juneteenth was established in Texas in 1865 to celebrate the emancipation of slaves and that it only became a national holiday in 2021. Most of my maternal family migrated to California from Northwest Louisiana, very close to East Texas and everyone loved to celebrate this monumental day.

The practice of eating red foods—red cake, barbecue, red punch and fruit– may owe its existence to the enslaved Yoruba and Kongo brought to Texas in the 19th century. For both of these cultures the color red is the embodiment of spiritual power and transformation.

This year I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share some traditional dishes with you all at The CIA Copia. The menu is inspired by the Meat and Three concept originated in the South and we hope you enjoy the offerings.”
