The harvesting of the grapes is arguably the most special time in Napa Valley. However, the period known as Wild Mustard Season plays a crucial part in ensuring the protection of those grapes, not to mention providing the spectacular beauty of yellow and gold throughout the region.
There are numerous analogies that could be made to explain just how important the Napa Valley mustard plants are to the region. Think of how the protective case on your cellphone keeps it from breaking when dropped; how suntan lotion helps prevent or lessens sunburns; or how a big offensive line can protect the quarterback from being sacked.
As grape vines go dormant late in the year, the replenishing process begins anew, the rain helps the grasses to grow, and the mustard plants blanket the vineyard grounds. In addition to providing erosion and pest control – as well as providing numerous Instagram pics to share with others – the mustard plant growth signals that spring is right around the corner!
February and March are an ideal time to take a drive through Napa Valley wine country and enjoy the golden colors of the season. Even better, enjoy the sights from way up high with a hot air balloon ride, or stay closer to the ground with a casual train or bike tour.

Through March 10, you can enjoy a Mustard Celebration Special at Norman Rose Tavern in Downtown Napa. The meal includes pancetta-wrapped pork tenderloin, roasted fingerling potatoes, and brussels sprouts with apple compote and mustard sauce. Norman Rose is open seven days a week with both indoor and outdoor seating available.
COLORS OF THE SEASON
Creative artwork with a mustard theme from more than 50 local artists will be on display during the month of March. Held at Art Gallery Napa Valley in Downtown Napa, the bright colors of wild mustard plants can be seen in a variety of media, including photography, jewelry, pottery, oil and acrylic painting, woodwork and more.
Jessel Gallery is celebrating the mustard season with a weekend full of activities. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 2 and 3, visitors can watch 15 professional artists as they create their works and crafts. There will be a People’s Choice Award bestowed during the weekend. You can also “Swoosh & Sip with Jessel,” where guests create a small painting with Jessel Miller and sample fine wine from Bougetz Cellars.
PET AND PEOPLE PERKS
From Feast it Forward to Winston’s to Napa Yard, if you love pets and perks with your wine-tastings, you’ll definitely want to be in Downtown Napa in the month of March.
During Pawsport Napa Valley 2024, two dozen Napa Valley wineries and restaurants will be offering special two-for-one tastings, food pairings, discounts and treats for dog owners and their best canine friends. Each $60 Pawsport includes more than $900 in experiences and goodies sure to please any palate – human or canine. This special event benefits Napa Humane, with money raised to help cover the cost of wellness exams, vaccines, treatments and microchipping.
When planning your vacation getaway to Downtown Napa, make sure to take a look at additional activities you can enjoy, such as gondola rides along the Napa River, e-bike rentals and tours aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train and Napa Valley Wine Trolley. Restaurants serving world-class cuisine – as well as establishments for those on a budget – can be found throughout the area.
