The Latest Entry to Burgeoning Downtown Napa Food Scene: Bellissimo

By, Carey Sweet

Downtown Napa’s little Main Street sure is hopping lately. Bellissimo Gourmet Italian Delicatessen has just opened on Main at First Street, joining the ranks of recent neighbors like Torc, Napkins Bar & Grill, Lulu’s Kitchen, and Lucero Olive Oil + ice cream sundaes.

Other coming-soon eateries on or within steps of Main Street include City Winery, Mango on Main, Second & Brown, an expanded Bounty Hunter, BurgerFi, and Velo Pizzeria (in the old Pilar space).

But back to the new Bellissimo.

The line-up from executive chef Glenn Haffner ranges through breakfast, lunch, dinner, and relative late night (10 p.m., an impressive closing time for Napa, yes). For his recipes. Haffner says he was inspired by his Sicilian grandparents, bringing signatures like the home-roasted pork loin on his toasted Sassari sandwich, sliced thick and topped in fresh pear, frisee and rosemary aioli on a baguette ($7.95).

The deli is just the latest step in the chef’s 35-year culinary career, including the former Aria Mediterranean Bistro in Woodland, with partner Chris Campbell.

Hot and cold sandwiches begin with daily baked bread, then continue on to meats and cheeses. That means breakfast models like fried egg with grilled eggplant, zucchini, onions and mozzarella on a bagel, croissant or bread ($3.95), and lunch/dinner choices such as the Torino spread with brie, frisee, pears, and fig tapenade ($7.95).
