Napa on Ice’s Fourth Season Begins

Skaters hit the ice Saturday at the Napa on Ice rink downtown Napa in T-shirts and shorts under bright blue skies.

The seasonal ice rink, now in its fourth season, is slated to remain open through Jan. 11 at the corner of Second and Coombs streets.

The rink opened a week early this year in part to draw more people downtown to help the merchants who have struggled after the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Napa on Aug. 24.

On Saturday, Maria Newman came on opening day with daughter 9-year-old daughter, Jewelyette, and her 10-year-old friend, Sophie Laird. They plan to return every weekend.

“It’s fun,” said Jewelyette, her rental skates on, before she and Sophie headed to the ice.

Newman and her family have come every season to the rink. “We’ll spend every weekend, at least one day,” she said. They also come at night.
