First Fridays at Copia & 10k Run for Charity
Fri-Sat May 04-05

Napa Valley Film Festival organizers are pleased to announce a new collaboration with The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Copia. NVFF will be curating a selection of films for the CIA’s Cinema at Copia series during First Fridays at Copia and select Conversations at Copia Sunday screenings. Both the NVFF and CIA at Copia programming teams will be selecting narrative and documentary features for the film series throughout the 2018 calendar year. Attendees may have the chance to see an old favorite classic selected by the CIA at Copia, or catch a beloved independent film from a past film festival. The eclectic mix of films will no doubt surprise and delight audience members each month.

To officially kick off the partnership, NVFF will bring back the 2017 Juried and Audience Award winning documentary, Skid Row Marathon, on Friday, May 4 at 5:30pm. Producer Gabi Hayes and Director Mark Hayes will be in attendance for a powerful post-screening discussion, along with Judge Craig Mitchell and Rafael Cabrera, one of the first members of the running club.

The film follows a criminal court judge who starts a running club on LA’s notorious Skid Row and begins training a motley group of recovering addicts and criminals to run marathons. The charismatic film subject, Judge Craig Mitchell, believes that if he can better the physical and psychological health of these individuals, then perhaps some of those successes and advancements might transfer over to their social and professional lives as well. The story is an inspiring and important one of enduring hope, friendship and dignity.

In celebration of the movie, and the filmmakers and subjects appearances, NVFF has organized a 10k Fun Run for charity on Saturday, May 5 at 9:30am. Runners, along with the filmmakers, Judge Mitchell, and Rafael Cabrera, will follow a route that begins at the Napa Riverfront Green on the corner of Third Street and Soscol Ave, along a course filled with scenic river views on the Napa Valley Vine Trail towards Kennedy Park. At the conclusion of the run, runners will be invited to enjoy a light reception of ‘rejuvenating’ bites and JCB bubbles in the CIA at Copia gardens (500 First Street) from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

All net proceeds collected from the run will directly benefit the Skid Row Running Club, helping Judge Mitchell provide sneakers and gear for its members.

Fun Run Registration is $75 per runner, or $85 including a ticket for the film the night before (saves $10). Space is limited, so reserve early at https://goo.gl/W1pJSf.

Tickets for the Skid Row Marathon screening and Q&A on May 4 are $20, and available at https://goo.gl/sxbKea.  All attendees are encouraged to join the festivities at the First Friday event, at the CIA at Copia, from 6:00pm-9:00pm, or dine at the Restaurant at Copia before or after the screening.

Supporting partners of the special screening, fun run, and brunch include the CIA at Copia, JCB Collection, and DoNapa.
